Advent Hymn 🎼 What Child Is This? đźŽ¶

A beloved carol by William C. Dix in 1865 was set to the tune of the traditional English folk song Greensleeves in 1871. It is more popular here in the United States than in Great Britain. The words reflect Dix’s spiritual renewal after a time of illness, during which he read the Bible extensively and was initially entitled The Manger’s Throne.

1. What Child is this who laid to rest
 On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
 Whom Angels greet with anthems sweet,
 While shepherds watch are keeping?

This, this is Christ the King,
 Whom shepherds guard and Angels sing;
 Haste, haste, to bring Him laud,
 The Babe, the Son of Mary.

2. Why lies He in such mean estate,
 Where ox and ass are feeding?
 Good Christians, fear, for sinners here
 The silent Word is pleading.

Nails, spear shall pierce Him through,
 The cross be borne for me, for you.
 Hail, hail the Word made flesh,
 The Babe, the Son of Mary.

3. So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh,
 Come peasant, King to own Him;
 The King of kings salvation brings,
 Let loving hearts enthrone Him.

Raise, raise a song on high,
 The Virgin sings her lullaby.
 Joy, joy for Christ is born,
 The Babe, the Son of Mary.

19And Micaiah, the prophet of God, said, “Therefore hear the Word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing beside him on his right hand and on his left ~ 1 Kings 22:19

7 But the Lord sits enthroned forever;
     he has established his throne for justice,
 8 and he judges the world with righteousness;
     he judges the peoples with uprightness. ~ Psalm 9:7-8

Most of us have never seen a throne up close and personal, nor can we fully grasp the authority that is manifested from it. The Saviour Jesus, Creator of the Universe, left the highest throne in heaven to enter Earth’s atmosphere in the most unusual and humble way. The God of all stooped down to our dusty world to move into the neighborhood to show us the Father. How much He loves us!

The Manger Throne by ems 12/17/21

From the manger to the throne in heaven, the Saviour Jesus reigns. He is the only baby in history who had a heavenly birth announcement by angels that lit up the skies. He is the Son of God, yet he came wrapped in human flesh birthed by the young girl Mary of Nazareth.

When I ponder the birth of Christ, I am amazed at God’s long-suffering patience. First, God waited until the right point in history to send His Son, and then Jesus spent 30 years on earth before He even began His ministry.

 After three full years of training chosen followers, Jesus rides humbly into Jerusalem on a donkey to the accolades of the crowds who had other ideas for his leadership. Then, in a week’s time, the public turns against Him. Yet, in love, Jesus willingly and blamelessly submits to death on the cross for the very people who rejected Him. It seems as if all Jesus worked for was lost. Yet, God’s divine plan was more incredible than our limited understanding.

The Father sought to communicate His love with one final Word, which divided time. Rather than a brief earthly kingship, God the Father accepted the Son’s spotless offering and raised Him to reign eternally after three days.

God, who created time, is not controlled by it but is the Master of it.

Every episode of Jesus’ earthly life exuded this unconditional love and showed us how to live with eternal purpose. Time for us measured out in twenty-four-hour increments is only received moment by moment.

Who is on the throne of your heart? To what do you devote your attention, and what minutes are allotted to you? One day, every knee will bow to the King of kings in heaven, on earth, and under the earth. Have you acknowledged that the manger baby is seated on the Forever Throne?

 God’s patient love is waiting for your response.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, Lord of all that exists, I am in awe of your patience and how You sought me with abandon so I would no longer wander in lostness. You have gifted me with time; may I use it for the glory due Your Name. May it be evident by my choices that I have invested precious time with You. May I bless others even as You have blessed me.
