Colossians 3:15

Be thankful that the peace of Christ rules in your hearts.

In the Bible, the Apostle Paul wrote to the followers of Jesus in the city of Colossae, now modern-day Turkey (Türkiye). Although he may have never met them face to face, Paul’s poignant and detailed letter gave heartfelt instructions to the believers (and us) on how to live the Christian life with increasing faith and growing success.

In chapter 3, he lists the necessary components each individual must clothe oneself with to put on the new self Christ calls us to. At the beginning of the chapter, in verses 5-11, Paul names the attitudes associated with the old self (before we put our faith in Christ) and the specific actions we must put off since we now represent Christ.

The motivation for all this is that one day, “when Christ who is your life appears (returns again to earth), then you also will appear with him in glory” Colossians 3:4.

The more intriguing list is what we ARE to clothe ourselves with now that we are God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved by Him. Paul admonishes us to:

“Put on then … compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. (Colossians 3: 12-14)

And with the ribbon on a beautifully wrapped package, Paul ties it all together in verse 15, saying,

“And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body.”

Did you catch that?

When we willingly put on this heaven-on-earth clothing, it yields peace and unity among believers in Christ.

All these character qualities were presented to us in living colour through Jesus’ thirty-three-year life on earth. He was our true 3-D example of what is good, right, pure, and just. So, if we have any questions about how to emulate this, we can read the Bible’s four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) and examine the eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ years in Israel. His peace will rule, take residence, and abide in us!

But it’s not enough to be imitators of Christ; we must believe that this God-man sacrificed his sinless life in our place so we could one day live in His place, heaven! Agreeing with God about our sin and being reconciled to God through Jesus’ death and resurrection gives us peace not just with one another but especially with God.

Dear friend, all of us have gone our own way and are enemies of God until we admit our need and are forgiven by believing the only way to heaven is through Jesus. God’s peace is lasting; a treaty written by the sinless blood of Jesus so we could be washed whiter than snow.

I urge you to choose God’s one way, one truth, one life, and everlasting peace.
You will be satisfied forever!
