Taste And See That The Lord Is Good

Rejoice today even if things are hard.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

We can rejoice because God is good and never changes. We can count on God not just in good times but especially when things are tough. He never leaves us nor forsakes us. But if we are honest, there are times when joy seems so far away, and it’s hard to lift our heads.
So what do we do?
One thing I have found to be helpful is to go outside and look at the beauty of God’s creation. In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth, He made everything simply by speaking things into being: unbelievable, intricate things from sky to sea. And He got everything ready before He created people. Sometimes, just observing a tiny insect can make me smile. Or watching a sunset as God paints the sky with incredible colors and shapes. These are refreshing and were created for us to enjoy.
A second idea I’ve found helpful is to listen to music. Most times, calm instrumental music is soothing and best. Other times, something with lots of excitement is what I need to make me joyful again. When I sing songs praising God, I remember how good and great He is and how small and insignificant my problems are.
Years ago, God gave me a fantastic gift: a woman who has loved me as her own and guided me to grow in my faith. The fun thing is that her name is Faith. She is my spiritual mom who prays with me, encourages me, and reminds me of God’s grace. We have connected as friends and sisters in Christ for over 40 years! I am blessed to have her in my life. Sometimes, we go for a walk together and share. Other times, we plant vegetables in the garden. But each time we are together or chat over the phone, we spend time praying together, offering our praise to God for who He is and what He has done.
Precious child, you are loved by God. When life becomes difficult, find a quiet spot and pour your heart into God. Tell Him all that troubles you. And then find a friend to pray with you and encourage you.
When I struggled immensely, my spiritual mom, Faith, taught me to hold up my hands and thank God for ten things, one for each finger. Then she would say, “Give me ten more for the toes!”
So, friend, hold up your hands, list those ten things you can be grateful for, and then go share them with someone else. Your joy will be multiplied!
Here’s a song that has comforted me. May it cheer you up today!
